Message from the Executive Director

The first case of Coronavirus Disease was diagnosed in Wuhan, mainland China in early December 2019. The epidemic has been spread to various countries and regions in just few weeks’ time. A “Public Health Emergency of International Concern” is formally declared by The World Health Organization on 30 January 2020, due to the outbreak of the virus across the globe.

The Coronavirus Disease can be transmitted through respiratory droplets and from person to person by direct contact. It is suggested that people should avoid staying in the crowded environments and should wear surgical mask when going outside.  Because of the shortage of mask supply at recent moment, reduce outings or social activities can lower the chance of being infected. You are encouraged to keep interpersonal contact and cheer each other by using Social Media platforms during this extraordinary period.

In accordance with the guideline from Centre of Health Protection, the most effective way to prevent transmission is performing hand hygiene. Apart from wearing surgical mask, washing the hands properly is very important, especially before touching the eyes, mouth, nose or food. Please do remember to use liquid soap or handrub to clean your hands for at least 20 seconds. If feeling sick, seek medical consultation promptly.

This recalled the severity of SARS outbreak in 2003. During that time, people in Hong Kong hand in hand to combat the pandemic successfully. 17 years later, we hope everyone will unite again and have fortitude to cope with this battle. And UCN will keep our post to provide primary medical services to the public. Let’s Safeguard Hong Kong and Fight against the virus together!

To echo with the World Cancer Day in February, the theme of the latest UCN Newsletter is “Prevention of Cancer”, which is set to encourage the public to exercise more, eat healthy and avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. It is also essential to monitor the physical condition and conduct health check and cancer screening test regularly, in order to protect personal health.

Last but not least, I wish you all have a happy Year of Rat with healthy and joyful life!
